RolfingWorks - Rediscover the vitality of life through movement

The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais MethodThe way we move is like a signature - unique to us. We all develop habitual ways of moving and postural habits that usually serve us well, but may also cause asymmetry, overuse, discomfort and even pain.

The Feldenkrais Method is a unique system of sensory-motor education that can help us to move better. It helps us become aware of our existing patterns of movement and then provides new options for movement. This generates an increased sense of ease, fluidity and pleasure in movement and an expanded self-awareness.

Feldenkrais practitioners work in two different ways:

Awareness Through Movement

These lessons are gentle movement explorations that are taught in groups. In these classes, attention is drawn to the quality and process of each movement. You learn to observe qualities of change in your body. The result is an enhanced awareness, flexibility and co-ordination.

Functional Integration

This is a hands-on process for people who require individual attention. The Feldenkrais practitioner guides your movements through gentle touch. The  client lies or sits, comfortably  clothed on a low padded table. Using precise handling the practitioner brings present habits into focus and offers new movement options. This learning is then applied to daily  activities such as reaching, sitting, standing and walking.

This method can effectively assist in:

  • improving posture and breathing
  • increasing range of movement and co-ordination
  • bringing a quality of lightness, ease and spontaneity in movement
  • restoring function after injury and neurological conditions
  • enhancing performance skills in areas such as sport, dance, music performance and martial arts

John often integrates Feldekrais-style work into his Rolfing sessions to enable clients to connect more deeply to the changes taking place.

"This method is to make the impossible, possible; the possible, easy; and the easy, elegant" - Moshe Feldenkrais
